Back in November 2015, Chief Boima (in his role as Africa is a Country’s managing editor) curated three panels at the Pan African Space Station‘s library-of-people installation at the Performa 15 Hub in New York City. AIAC invited Dutty Artz’ DJ Ushka, York College Professor and writer Rishi Nath, and AIAC’s photo editor Zachary Rosen to host three podcasts on behalf of Africa is a Country.

Got some more Iswayski for ya! Today’s focus is Azonto beats.

The Ghana dance that’s been wildly popular for the past few years continues to result in a lot of good music. The beat that’s generally associated with it is a super dancey and effective pop formula blended with traditional Ga drumming. Who made the first beat is up for debate, but E.L‘s “U Go Kill Me” is what brought it to the masses.

I’m still surprised I don’t hear more of this in US club sets outside of African nights. It’s impossible not to move your body to, has high production standards, and a lot of the lyrics are even in English. Maybe it’s because so few Western artists are producing it? The UK has Fuse ODG bringing it to the Grime crowds and the whole Afrobeats thing is probably helping to spread it over there. But there’s not much of an American counterpart to any of that. Not that any of this matters as a symbol of the sound’s success, I just personally fuck with it and would like to hear more of it.

So let’s go over a few recent tracks that are doing pretty well that I like a lot:

BomBeat EP1 November 24, 2012 @ LPR NYC by BomBeat

We keep it fresh at iBomba and tonight we’re bringing you some guests up from Canada to get you winding. Don’t miss our guest DJ tonight from Montreal, Poirier! AND added bonus, Colombian-Toronto darling, Lido Pimienta will be doing a set, so if you missed her at Que Bajo?! last week, this is your second chance.

More on our guests:

Ghislain Poirier has become recognized as one of the world’s leading tropical bass DJs, using electro, hip-hop, soca, U.K. funky, and dancehall beats along with vocalists and rappers comfortable with his mesh of those genres. You can download his new Kidnap Riddim for free here.

Lido Pimienta, a visual artist and musician from Toronto reppin’ hard for Colombia jumps back and forth from electronic music to afro colombian music with ease. I watched her skillfully blend folkoric Colombian music with electronica at her performance at Que Bajo?! last Thursday, with lyrics steeped in political undertones. A must see.

We welcome both of them to the iBomba family to join myself (DJ Ushka) and DJ Beto keep the vibe right all night.

When: Monday, October 8th; 10pm – 4am

Where: Bembe, 81 South 6th St

Two months ago, I sat down with Mandip Kalsi to talk about New York’s party scene, building community through music, and the move of his Philly-based Dutty Chutney party to New York. Mandip, one of the resident deejays of Dutty Chutney expressed the intention of the party as a place to blend a variety of genres from the Caribbean to South Asia, electronic to bhangra, soca to reggae, and dancehall to hard-hitting bass. Already known in Philadelphia, we discussed how the move was the opportunity for DC to push the envelope with new guest DJs and add new flavor to New York’s nightlife.

I’d never been to DC while it was in Philly, so I got the chance to check it out last month when the homie, Geko Jones, guest deejayed the first DC in Brooklyn. Currently hosted at The Cove, I saw the music attract a diverse crowd, one that in my experience is sometimes difficult to bring out to that part of Williamsburg.

And so we’ve been talking about how to keep creating a space that attracts and challenges new crowds, and how to keep growing Dutty Chutney as it finds its niche in New York.

This Friday, guest DJ, Beto (iBomba) tears it up with residents Mandip and M-Ski. As the host of the iBomba, I’ll definitely say you don’t want to miss this Dutty Chutney vs. iBomba clash – future dancehall, future bass, future everything.

Peace good peoples. I’m new around here, so thanks firstly to Jace for having me. This here is a mix from my group Old Money for the good folks at VANE. Less a compilation of “the new hot shit” and more so genuine touchstones of influence for us. A cpl unreleased jawns on there from us, as well as one from Boima’s forthcoming African In New York. I’m really and truly still amazed that Boima managed to make me like that Usher song.

when does a battle mix become a ceasefire mix? avant-garde was originally a military term – the foremost guard in the army advancing into conflict. battle mix. myself and jon hanuman. the peace was brokered by the abstractor blog (based in Caracas/Barcelona/Elsewhere) and is therefore bilingüe.

it’s available with tracklist and even interview here.

second: adesh samroo is from trinidad. he makes chutney soca (that’s soca made by trinidad and guyana’s large populations of south asian – imperial – extraction). This tune is from his ‘thanks to all’ album. It makes a good case as to why cat meat is better than dog meat.

3Suns – Give It Up

Last Sunday while Gex was blessing me w/ lessons on the decks, we must have listened to this riddim (version here by 3Suns) about about a million times because it’s stuck in my head and I have been whistling it or parts of it for a few days.  So here it is, I hope it haunts you too.

More than flour, more than rice, more even than Gasoline. DuttyArtz.com readers, don’t say I never gave you anything. Not only is this mixtape hot but it is actually THE MOST EXPENSIVE MIXCD EVER. Normally it costs $999.99 but since I like you I’m gonna hook you all up. Wow. Bronx dancing, selecting, trend setting dancehall icon Skerrit Bwoy linked us in early on this mix by him, Jazzy Joyce from Hot97 and Walshy Fire from Black Chiney. Joyce plays hiphop, Skerrit holds down Dancehall and Walshy drops Soca. Check for the two exclusive dubplates on two of my riddims for Skerrit’s Ghetto Life Entertainment sound system of Jahdan’s Go Round Payola and 77Klash’s Mad Again in his section of the mix. If you don’t know about Skerrit Bwoy he’s one of the craziest all around entertainers in NYC hailing out of Bronx. Check for his guest appearance in the Mad Again video coming soon, it is absolutely MAD SICK HEAD NUH GOOD.
