Check me out this Sunday the 17th here in NYC playing with 6Blocc aka RAW from LA for Konkrete Jungle at Coco66 in Greenpoint. I started raving in 1994 at Konkrete at Coney Island High on St. Marks (which is now a juice bar or some bullshit). Always an honor to link back up with the foundation.

Solar Life Raft- the mix that keeps on giving- has finally made its way to your local record stores. /rupture and Shadetek working together is a serious Voltron force. It’s safe to say that I have listened to SLR over a hundred times since it was recorded- and I’m still finding reasons to go back. Opening with Time-Blind’s abstract tone poetry and closing with a gorgeous re-work from /rupture and Shadetek of Telepathe, it’s easy to miss all the ground the mix has covered.

Tracklists are the weird anathema of the DJ Mix- always reminding us as producers and consumers that for some reason the sounds cant just stand alone. A tracklist can mark a DJ’s access to dub-plates and exclusives or their prodigal digging- but always the tracklist serves as a sort of roadmap for listeners that want to go beyond the mix and gain some traction in it. Often I’ll look to a track list before deciding whether or not to listen to a given mix. Or I will return to the tracklist after hearing something amazing that I want to be up on.

SLR stands alone without the tracklist- and the hype that goes along with it- people read the tracklist and think, “Wow, this sure is eclectic”- but it’s not grab bag by any means- its laser precision etched in bass. It is hard to believe after listening to SLR that you’ve just digested sounds as seemingly diverse as Cardopusher, Paavoharju, and Luc Ferrari. One you get used to these sorts of mixes- where genre-orthodoxy and rigid notions of sonic-geographies are left behind- it gets pretty fucking hard to go back to an hour of any BPM mixed seamlessly at the start of 8, 16 and 32 bar phrases and movements.

/rupture and Shadetek can really cook in the lab. I’ve always rated Matt for his back-from-the-crossroads skills in Logic. I mean- from what I know- he was the first stateside producer to actually be doing production for grime dudes in London. /rupture on the other hand has always been off in a zone that seemed far more experimental- where quantization was frowned upon and standard timing or track development was laughed out the door. Through the last few years they seem to have tempered each others workflows and styles in all the right ways- and SLR should be an announcement that these two can make tracks with the very best of them. The album is almost a third original production and its the home grown tracks that really provided the convincing narrative that holds the mix together.

Effusive praise can ring hallow coming from ones own crew- but I’m not just trying to ramp up sales- Solar Life Raft is remarkable. Do whatever your ethical radar tells you in regard to consuming music and somehow, someway, find yourself a copy. If that happens to be amazon, boomkat, itunes, or beatport….just think of it as investing in more music.

Jahdan Blakkamoore BUZZROCK WARRIOR album release party!

quebajo2

The album drops September 15th, and on the 17th Que Bajo?! is throwing a party with special live performance by Jahdan, accompanied by super producer extraordinaire and deejay Matt Shadetek.  Jahdan & Matt are also getting ready for some touring and special performances later this Fall and into the Winter. Dates and details will be here soon. For now, come enjoy the party! On the same night, we are also blessed with the appearance of the great Eddie Stats of The FADER and GHETTO PALMS series. Eddie Stats is sharp, efficient, and just ridiculously good behind the decks. DJ Rekha of Basement Bhangra will also be live with tunes for the all around dance floor massacre. Dutty Artz family/Que Bajo?! resident deejays/two of the wickedest sound men I know Geko Jones and Uproot Andy will be in the building serving their usual, tremendous heat, along with some blazing refixes. facebook RSVP here.

Available now at Boomkat, eMusic, Juno, and other digital download stores, in MP3, WAV, and FLAC formats, a new release from Dutty Artz by a powerful vocalist/musician Mariana Yegros. The original track “Trocitos De Madera” produced by King Coya is followed by some extra-special remixes from DJ /rupture and Matt Shadetek, El Remolon, and Marcelo Fabian, throwing the pieces in other exciting directions, with fantastic results.

Artwork designed, and enhanced with handcrafted details, by a wonderful artist Claudia Rivas. As you can, it is absolutely beautiful. Claudia is also behind the cover of Solar Life Raft.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 21st

GLASSLANDS
289 Kent Ave (between. South 1st street & South 2nd street.)
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
L train to Bedford
11pm – 4am

NY Tropical 8 was a spectacular event. Special thanks to Zuzuka Poderosa and all those crazy dancers. Rupture, Shadetek, Geko blessed the crowd with some incredible sets— so solid, I wished I had recorded all their sets! This time, we are joined by some more incredible deejays and guests, from Rio to Oakland.  MAGA BO, live all the way from his base Rio de Janeiro, will be in the building serving up Transnational Bass and all sort of international heat.  DJ RIPLEY— “lifesaving whirlwind mistress of sonic devastation with hot sauce”– just back from that small, vibrant, and powerful island nation that is responsible for some much of the music we listen and dance to, is going to throw an early set which is guaranteed to to be fantastic— BE ON TIME, PEOPLE. We also have a special live appearance by RHIANNON (songstress from the Subatomic Soundsystem.) Matt Shadetek and I are holding things down for the fam.

DJ Rupture & Matt Shadetek Solar Life Raft CD Cover
OK we’re going in again. This time it’s me and Rupture, Solar Life Raft, the new mix album dropping November 11th on The Agriculture. For those of you that caught Uproot and enjoyed it we’re taking the format and going in deeper, wider, rougher. Me and /R have been cooking up tracks together for a while, some of which are appearing on Jahdan’s album and some on SLR. It’s our first official thing together with our names on it which is pretty exciting. It’s got a bunch of unreleased exclusive new collabo instrumentals plus excluse remixes of Telepathe and Gang Gang Dance. Mad I know. Expect to hear a lot more about it here soon.

With the release of Solar Life Raft, DJ /rupture and Matt Shadetek emerge from the shores of Brooklyn bearing gifts from the future. A rich blend of bass, beats, and space, rocked by a tropical wind out of the west, Solar Life Raft is an arresting testament to the fruit that grows at the margins, free from genre orthodoxy and pulsing with gentle mutant energy. Created by two individuals with a shared appreciation for engaging with streetwise dance music from a ground-up, participatory perspective, as well as more experimental sounds, Solar Life Raft, the duo’s first extended project together, features tracks blended on three decks into a complete hypnotic and gripping narrative.

Jahdan Blakkamoore – Never Gonna Stop (produced by Matt Shadetek & DJ /rupture)

from BAZOOKA SHOT mixtape, which is coming next week. Jahdan sounds incredible, and very smooth. Matt & Jace are on some old skool grime ting w/ this riddim.  Some of the elements in it reminded me of Eskiboy around 2003-05. The tune also has a great slow down dancehall grind, lighters in the air vibes too.

BUZZROCK WARRIOR coming this September!

Eddie Stats just upped some much needed, dancefloor grazing blends of works/riddims by Jahdan (longside di man call Shadetek) & Klash over at his FADER Ghetto Palms column. Ghislain Poirier, Face T, Busy Signal, Sizzla, and the legendary Sugar Minnott are all included in the package. Hurry on over there to listen and download.
