ORION ON DECK

by Rupture. February 22nd, 2010

orion

On the radio tonight, I’ll be hosting Austin’s DJ Orion, performing live in studio! He’s extending the great Texan tradition of keeping cumbia crunk with his latest release, Carajo Colombia. After his DJ set we’ll find time for a quick interview and ticket giveaways to his Que Bajo show @ Santos on Thursday.

Here’s a taste of ‘Carajo Colombia’, you can buy it – setting your own price! – here

LA NEGRA TOMAZA

by Rupture. February 10th, 2010

El Hijo de la Cumbia has a new video out: La Mara Tomaza. This is a version of classic tune “La Negra Tomasa”, whose tropical mutations Sonido Martines blogs about here.

Bay Area DJ Disco Shawn was on my radio show this Monday, which he kicked off by playing H.D.C.’S Mara Tomaza (from Bersa Discos #1 as well as El Hijo’s debut album, Freestyle de Ritmos, published on Soot).

In addition to great tunes, Shawn shares consistently fascinating observations on cumbia, tribal, and what’s catching his ear from the UK: you can stream it here or grab the podcast (his show will be available as podcast next Monday).

quebajo2

The album drops September 15th, and on the 17th Que Bajo?! is throwing a party with special live performance by Jahdan, accompanied by super producer extraordinaire and deejay Matt Shadetek.  Jahdan & Matt are also getting ready for some touring and special performances later this Fall and into the Winter. Dates and details will be here soon. For now, come enjoy the party! On the same night, we are also blessed with the appearance of the great Eddie Stats of The FADER and GHETTO PALMS series. Eddie Stats is sharp, efficient, and just ridiculously good behind the decks. DJ Rekha of Basement Bhangra will also be live with tunes for the all around dance floor massacre. Dutty Artz family/Que Bajo?! resident deejays/two of the wickedest sound men I know Geko Jones and Uproot Andy will be in the building serving their usual, tremendous heat, along with some blazing refixes. facebook RSVP here.

schlachthofbronx feat. slushpuppykids – belly full of pills mix

Schlachthofbronx are preparing to release their debut. In meantime, the Bavarian bounce developers link up with South African cribwalkers (them Slush Puppy Kids aka Spoek Mathambo + Big Space) to offer us an appetizer, a taste of what’s to come.  This mini-mix, which contains tracks from a forthcoming EP that drops before the album, is a dancefloor scorcher–extreme heat.

AKWAABA SEM TRANSPORTE

by Lamin. August 10th, 2009

transporte_lo

Last Tuesday, Akwaaba Music released Akwaaba Sem Transporte (stream the album on Fairtilizer here) – a kuduro compilation “straight from the source,” Luanda, Angola.  Akwaaba Music founder Benjamin Lebrave spent six weeks in Angola, earlier this year, gathering and licensing tracks from rappers and DJs, and the result is a raw,  authentic, high-energy dance comp. I’m aware that notions of authenticity, especially in the global ghetto-tech and nu whirled music (™ wayne&wax) discourse is quite problematic – is the kuduro coming out of Lisbon/Europe any less authentic that what’s coming out of Luanda/Africa? European kuduro has definitely received and continue to receive more shine off late in Europe and America.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Dred Man-Gi feat. Nell – Não Ta Se Entender

This one is weird, and probably the least danceable track on the compilation, but it’s the one I like best. Upbeat, yes –but with a fractured, heavy beat and a disruptive flow. The MP3 above is standard bit rate/128 – Head over to iTunes for better quality/320 kbps, so you can hear and enjoy all the bass and efx, and check out the rest of the comp, which is all very danceable– and Dutty Artz supports that kind of music!

Also, check out Ghetto Palms last week – Benjamin writes + Eddie blends.

Mare Pacificum

by Taliesin. August 3rd, 2009

Having only been away from the states for nine months I’m amazed at the diversity of produce available at the grocery store. I’m equally excited about the excellent shows laced up and down the best coast these next few weeks.

First up is Tim Turbo from Seen (aka the non-hippie reggae and dance hall site) and Danny Scrilla doing dates down California  and then over into Texas… “equipped with black duffle bags, brimful with Ghetto Lazerbass.”

Turbo and Scrilla Tour Mix Tracklist HERE

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

August 5th, San Francisco @ Vessel Nightclub
August 6th, Santa Barbara @ EOS Lounge
August 7th, L.A. @ Lot 613
August 8th, San Diego @ The W Hotel
August 12th, Dallas @ Zubar
August 13th, Austin @ Barcelona

I really wish they could have joined me up in Cascadia- where I’ve got a few things going on in the next week.

I’ll be dropping down to Portland for a party this Saturday- August 8- with the Various crew at Branx… You can listen to the exclusive mix “DefinatelyMaybe” I did for them HERE.

Next week, the 13th,  I’ll be up in Vancouver  with the Thursday Ting! Crew at The Woods Studio @ 2nd and Ontario

Come through!

THIS MUST BE OUR TIME

Double Jay – Time 2 Shine

Early on this year, Wayne (you already know – wayneandwax.com) introduced us to Skeat’s “Dumelang” – a jam which I think gets played at every New York Tropical, and I’ve heard Geko Jones and Uproot Andy played it several times at Que Bajo?! and other parties, and needless to say, it destroys the dance every time.  Big up Wayne & Botswana’s Ruff Riddims for unleashing that, and this “brand new dirrty south african hip-hop” by Double Jay.

CIAfrica – URgencia

I am ripping this directly from Jace’s mudd up! post.  Get the blazing new mixtape CIA History Part 3 (zip). Listen to the new exclusive jam “Black Mama” which we played a little while ago on Mudd Up, and me getting their name wrong on air, calling them C-I-A-Africa, when it is C-I-Africa. Raw and heavy, politically hostile sounds from Abijan. Get familiar.
