MUTATE AND TURN LIKE AKIRA

by Matt Shadetek. March 9th, 2010

New heat from 77Klash produced by Drop The Lime.  Klash is going in on some deep anti-nuclear annhilation lyrics over a cool dubstep/wobble house beat by Mr. Venezia.  Look out for the “Shadow of Death EP” coming soon on Trouble & Bass Records, I’m interested to hear what they come up with.

Jah Mason – I Told You (Paul Alt Remix)

Belgium producer Paul Alt reheats a 77Klash riddim voiced by Jah Mason. I think it’s safe to say that riddims associated with 77Klash are immune to dying.  Klash City Records released The Swarm Riddim over two years ago, and refixes are still surfacing. Paul Alt whips up a sweet and heavy dance beat guaranteed to scorch dance floors, or just turn your holiday party a bit more nasty.  That artwork is very appropriate for the song’s lyrics. A man expresses an excessive desire for and to a girl he has been watching admiringly for a long time – Girlfriend, I told you,  you’re gonna be fine. Just give me your love & I’ll give you mine… After a few seconds, he tells her to keep it confidential.

Lift Off

Nautilus
BD1982 is at the top of my criminally slept on list. Representing the Seclusiasis camp from Tokyo, where he moved from NYC a few years ago, dudes managed to get in with Goth-Trad and the infamous Back to Chill crew while simultaneously cooking up some of my absolute favorite tracks. He’s got a new 12″ that is dripping Xenon.

A. side is Dutty family 77Klash on the gunman tip over the crushing Water Faucet Riddim. The flip is the skittering Space Boots with remixes from some of the the biggest up and comers on the scene the U.K’s Slugabed and Montreal’s Hovatron. It’s hard to describe what happened in Vancouver last month when I dropped the Slugabed mix (Dev79 call it “hyper color style”) since the combination of howling low end fiends and gorgeous writhing Canadians basically led to sensory overload and total black out. If this is the sort of thing your interested in….cop the rest of the tracks @ Beatport Bleep Juno Download iTunes

JAHDAN & 77KLASH – BEST I EVER HAD FREESTYLE

Jahdan Blakkamoore featuring 77Klash – Best I Ever Had Freestyle

Jahdan’s album Buzzrock Warrior drops in September. In the meantime, we’re setting the Summer on fire with Jahdan’s Bazooka Shot mixtape, which is coming sooner than you think.  The night this freestyle was done, I think the guys (Jahdan, Klash, and Matt) recorded five other tracks, and this was the last one.  It was pure fun.  I gave the instrumental to Matt, he edited/re-shaped it in less than two minutes, Jahdan & Klash went in.  Jahdan was alredy familiar with the hit song by Toronto’s own Drake, and was singing it the minute he heard the beat. I had never heard this song by choice.  Klash wasn’t familiar with it, so he start singing Radiohead’s “Climbing the Walls,” and I was like yeah! Anyway, the vibe at Casa de la Jones (Geko Jones’ home-studio, where it all goes down) was great, and everyone was having a good time.  We’re doing it again next week, putting the finishing touches on the Bazooka Shot tape.  Jahdan and Klash are going in again, and they might be remixing, freestyling, covering whatever tune they feel like again.

BUZZROCK WARRIOR

by Matt Shadetek. June 4th, 2009

cover photo by Amir Ebrahimi amirnyc.com, layout by Matt Shadetek

After a few intense months of beat-making, recording and asking a few favors from friends, DUTTY ARTZ family finished production on Jahdan Blakkamoore’s debut album, Buzzrock Warrior.  We think its the best thing we’ve ever made, and we’re proud to announce that Gold Dust Media agree with us, as they will be releasing Buzzrock, insuring that our take on Brooklyn Tropical Dubstep  will be heard worldwide.  The album brings together many of the Dutty Artz crew’s interests including dancehall, digital cumbia, grime, dubstep and other delicious tropical sounds.

Jahdan is in fine form throughout singing and chatting over riddims from diverse producers including homegrown tunes by Shadetek and Rupture, ragga techno dons Modeselektor, grime super hero Jammer, the Zizek crew’s Chancha via Circuito and globe trotter Maga Bo.   Dutty Artz extended family 77Klash appears twice on guest vocal duties and provides the gorgeous uncategorizable beat for ‘She Said’ while top grime boy Durrty Goodz goes in hard with JD on ‘Mesmerized’ and Abena Koomson joins in to bring us slowly down on closer ‘Rise Again’.

For an early taste of the vibes check out The General, out now on 12″ with banging dubstep remixes by Noah D. and Marcus Visionary and also look for Jahdan’s appearance, the roots flavored ‘Cash Flow’, on Diplo and Switch’s highly anticipated Major Lazer project available June 16th.

TROPICAL MOUSSO

by Lamin. May 22nd, 2009

dutty artz ny tropical

New York Tropical is exactly a week from today! Check the flyer – we are designers, you already know. To get ready, I have put a podcast together containing mostly women voices over beats and sounds composed by men. I wasn’t specifically looking for female voices on male constructed instrumentals, it just happened most of the tracks I gather are refixes and songs with women voices recorded by gentlemen producers (I was tempted to call this Women… In The Vicinity Of Men. Thankfully, I settled on MoussoWe need some more gyals in here… too many man, too many, many man!

UTNE HEARTS OUR GUEST

by Rupture. May 18th, 2009

eddie

Not only is DJ Eddie ‘Stats’ Houghton joining Dutty Artz on the decks at the next New York Tropical party, but he received a special shoutout in the 2009 UTNE Independent Press Awards, which awarded Best Arts coverage to The Fader.

They say:

“We’re always looking for the next article from Edwin ‘Stats’Houghton, the globe-trottingest Fader correspondent, who drops into musical subcultures like a paratrooper and sends back dossiers on what’s moving butts. His vivid dispatch from the kwaito dance-party scene in Johannesburg, South Africa, was so good we published an excerpt as “Post-Apartheid Pop.”

We say:

YESSIR, HE’S A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. PARTIED WITH. Come check Eddie rock Brooklyn with Matt Shadetek, 77Klash, and Uproot Andy on Friday May 29th @ Glasslands in Williamsburg (as I hold it down in Berlin with The Bug and Geko Jones mashes up San Fran alongside brother Boima.)

APPLY MORE PRESSURE

by Matt Shadetek. April 7th, 2009

New tune by me and 77Klash leaked in advance of his “No Fear” album (with more beats by me on it).

Pressure – 77Klash feat. Matt Shadetek

The Fader says: “We’ve been following the individual trails of Brooklyn’s own power-chatter 77Klash and beatmaker extraordinaire Matt Shadetek for a real hot minute, as musical innovators of the biggest borough and as style inspirers (shout to Klash’s reversible multicolor vest and purple button-down he wore during his special live performance on FADER Radio in Austin. Individually, we sweat them, but together, they make a transcendent kind of bass-laden magic (see: ““Brooklyn Anthem“). This new Klash track with the evil grimey deez by Shadetek is the Jamaican-influenced equivalent of two fuzzy eyebrows slanted downward in a mean face, or maybe just the sound of your huge crew rolling up to the park in like, five trucks. We will roll with you, dudes! ”

Shouts to Mad Decent for posting this as well.

TAKE CHARGE ALBUM RELEASE PARTY

by Geko Jones. February 18th, 2009

We’ve got a lot to give thanks for this week. The addition of Archer ‘Babytek’ Schell to the DA Fam. The forth coming family reunion this friday in Bed Stuy. and this….

Jahdan’s band Noble Society, winners of the I-tunes Reggae Album of the year are taking time off the grind to celebrate the release of their second full length, Take Charge.

OKAYPLAYER.COM had this to say…

“Noble Society is not your weed head uncle’s reggae band. Fronted by former Boot Camp Click affiliate, Jahdan, this Brooklyn outfit eschews the open, organic grooves of traditional roots music. Their ambitious debut, Take Charge is winter time reggae, world music for the new world order; a juxtaposition of the social and spiritual ruminations of vintage island music, the cold, claustrophobia of modern electronica, and the aggressive percussion of hip hop. When everything clicks, the urgency of the production adds heft to the fiery content that is characteristic of the genre, but often muted by the mellow bounce of the soundscapes. “

MAD AGAIN (WHOA!) & REEF VIDEOS

by Matt Shadetek. October 6th, 2008

Yes, we’re taking over YouTube.

The video for Reef by Baby Kites and Nokea, two young producers from the DA camp, directed by Panoptic is out. It’s a promo for DJ /Rupture’s new uproot CD (buyable). Thanks to the people at YouTube for putting us on the front page and getting us thousands of views, dozens of inane comments and spam and friend requests from random people in the past two hours of it being up there. The internet is a wild and wonderful place.

Next is the official worldwide exclusive premiere of 77Klash’s new video for Mad Again (Whoa!) from his Code for the Streets EP (on iTunes) produced by myself Matt Shadetek. In case you were wondering, yes that’s reggae legend Johnny Osbourne in the video. He came and laid his classic whoa-yea chorus for us in the studio, it’s not a sample as some people have thought. The video shoot was a lot of fun. Watching the dancers from Ground Zero and Dancerz Blvd do their thing was crazy, Skerrit Bwoy brought his usual maddness to the set (that’s him with the ladder and garbage can, nuts as usual), Max Glazer, Gravy, Barrington, Mass Processor and both generations of Crazy Legs all made appearances (the young dancehall dancer and the vet b-boy). Check the video, directed by Jon Fine.
