DUBSPOT RADIO: DJ SHIFTEE & STAR EYES

by Matt Shadetek. July 7th, 2010

We had a great session down in the Dubspot basement last Monday.  Dubspot’s own DJ Shiftee and Trouble and Bass’s Star Eyes came down and melted our brains.  Shiftee played an hour long set of full blast dubstep, electro whatever all expertly mangle-ated on Traktor and Maschine in real time.  It was exciting.  Star Eyes followed with an ill set of deep and largely un-released funky, garage, dubstep and grime(!) both from herself and a who’s who of the international underground dance music scene.  I always love hearing her play.   Hit the Dubspot blog to stream or download the two sets, sign up for the Dubspot Radio podcast (which is produced and hosted by me and Lamin) and log on with us every Monday on Ustream from 8-10PM EST to heat up your earz if they weren’t already hot enough in this fucked up heat wave we’re having.

DUTTY ARTZ RADIO WITH NGUZUNGUZU

by Matt Shadetek. July 2nd, 2010

Last Monday we had a great show here in the basement of Dubspot on Dutty Artz radio.  We streamed live on UStream as usual and had a bunch of people logged in while Taliesin, Mosholu Park and myself played some short sets followed by an epic 80 minute throwdown from NguzuNguzu.  Listen through to the end to hear Daniel playing congas over juke beats live.  I was a little drunk by that point but I remember it sounding super duper dope.  You can check our ustream channel to see video of the session.  I’m told that not all files in these posts are being pushed to the podcast stream so I’ll put their set first and you can click to stream or download the rest of ours.

MOSCA AND MATT SHADETEK AT TURRBOTAX

by Matt Shadetek. June 29th, 2010

This Friday I’ll be playing at my current favorite party in NYC, Turrbotax.  I really like what Contakt and the Turrbotax crew have  put together there.  They’re playing a really cool blend of new dance music and it’s always a fun hype atmosphere.  Free beer by Asahi from 11-12 doesn’t hurt either.  I’m especially pleased about this Friday’s Turrbotax Business Edition since I’ll be playing with Mosca of Night Slugs.  Mosca produced the 10 minute post-funky epic ‘Nike’ which really got my ears open last year.  I expect this to be one to remember so please do come out and sweat with us.

RITA INDIANA DEBUT RELEASE ON DUTTY ARTZ

by Matt Shadetek. June 28th, 2010

Dutty Artz is very pleased to announce the debut official release from Dominican underground superstar Rita Indiana.  For those unfamiliar with Rita’s vibe download her La Hora De Volver here, courtesy of Remezcla.  Perez Hilton is a fan saying:  ”Super caliente!  We are obsessed with it – and HER!!!!!!!”

Her Dutty Artz single features two songs.  One, called ‘No Ta Llevando El Diablo’ (translated as ‘The Devil is Taking Us Away’) is Rita backed by her band Los Misterios.  It’s an angry blast of punk mambo with Rita singing about grannies smoking crack over distorted guitars, guira and 808 boom added by Shadetek and Rupture.  The second track ‘Los Poderes’ is Rita solo over Shadetek and Rupture’s rework of a Bannana Clipz riddim (Bannana Clipz is Dutty Artz own Chief Boima and Bersa Discos Oro 11).  Over a mix of digital and live hand-drumming contributed by Ivory Nunez playing an interpretation of Dominican Palo over Bannana Clipz 4×4 beat Rita sings a haunting tropical voodoo ballad.

The release will be available July 6th in all fine digital retailers including iTunes, Juno, Amazon and Boomkat.  In the meantime, soak your eyes in these:

DUBSPOT RADIO

by Matt Shadetek. June 24th, 2010
Raz Mesinai at Dubspot Radio

Raz Mesinai at Dubspot Radio

Me and Lamin are both working at Dubspot now and we are doing a new radio show out of the Dubspot basement!  It’s being streamed and podcasted.  Subscribe at the original post!

Our first guests on the Dubspot Radio Podcast are two New York heavyweights: Dave Q and Badawi.  Dave Q has played a pivotal role in bringing Dubstep to NYC through his respected Dub War parties and his forward looking DJ sets.  Badawi aka Raz Mesinai is a long time participant in many mutant strains of dub music in NY and internationally and has now teamed up with Dave Q to start The Index, their new label project.  Among his many activities Raz is also an instructor here at Dubspot teaching students to produce in Ableton Live.  The broadcast contains a mix by Dave Q playing from Serato followed by a short set from Raz on Ableton and at the end an interview with host Matt Shadetek.

Check out the mix and interview on Dubspot’s soundcloud:

BLACK AND BLUE: NEW CUBIC ZIRCONIA

by Matt Shadetek. June 12th, 2010
YouTube Preview Image

New hotness from New York homies Cubic Zirconia feat. our boy in South Afrika Mr. Ghost Bones himself Spoek Mathambo.  I’ve known lead singer Tiombe Lockhart for a while now ever since me and Zack released a track of hers on Shadetek Records (back when that was still a going concern) and always loved her singing.

Now she’s teamed up with Nick Hook and the rest of the Cubic Zirconia fam to form this band project and they are killing it a lot.  I got to play with them and hang with them at SXSW this year and they put on a killer show.  Sort of house music with a band (for lack of a better term) really fun live and Tiombe is a super charismatic front-woman.

The video is on some ill Orson Welles one-shot auteur film making shit directed by Khalil Joseph and looks like a million bucks although knowing that Cubic are on a similar DIY go-for-self vibe as we are and releasing on their label I’m guessing it didn’t cost that.  Download this minimix from their new Black and Blue EP and vote with your dollars to support good independent music on Tuesday June 15th when it drops.

Their release party is this Tuesday June 15th at Damon Dash Gallery (?!) with an art opening to boot.  Flier:

This, their previous video ‘Josephine’ is crazy too.

MATT SHADETEK – FLOWERS

by Matt Shadetek. June 8th, 2010

My new solo instrumental album Flowers is out!  YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

It took me a while to get this out, longer than I’d like considering it’s on my own label but now it’s out and it feels GOOD!  I love completing projects.  But it’s not done!  Now I have to actually sell some copies!  If you or your grandma or your friends on the internet would like to support the Dutty Artz movement and contribute to the cause of me buying diapers, catfood and continuing my lavish lifestyle for me and my young family that would be great!  There are many places to buy it.  Here is a list:

BUY MATT SHADETEK – FLOWERS:

Boomkat:
This is probably a good option if you want FLAC or any of those non-mp3 formats.
iTunes (USA):
If you buy here please write me a lavish review and give me five stars!  I deserve it!  If you’re browsing the store from your phone or whatever I am featured in front of the Electronic category in the USA store.

PLAY DI TING

by Matt Shadetek. April 25th, 2010

Heatwave continuing to hott up the funky bashment axis. This time with a nice Natalie Storm – now crowned The Queen of Funky Bashment – over Footsteps “Worker” funky riddim. I’ve been playing this riddim a lot in my dj sets for the past few months and it always works, cool to hear Nats on it.

MUTATE AND TURN LIKE AKIRA

by Matt Shadetek. March 9th, 2010

New heat from 77Klash produced by Drop The Lime.  Klash is going in on some deep anti-nuclear annhilation lyrics over a cool dubstep/wobble house beat by Mr. Venezia.  Look out for the “Shadow of Death EP” coming soon on Trouble & Bass Records, I’m interested to hear what they come up with.

NEVER BE YOUR WOMAN

by Matt Shadetek. February 24th, 2010

YouTube Preview ImageBig tune from Wiley’s forthcoming album. The beat is by Shy FX which apparently was a remix that became the main mix. Very nice house/old school hiphop something or other vibes. Wiley in top form as always, picked up from Marcus Visionary’s blog where there’s lots of other good stuff.

MR. ROSKA

by Matt Shadetek. January 15th, 2010

Anyone who’s come and seen me DJ lately knows I’ve been loving me some UK Funky. This guy Roska is doing some nice stuff that sort of connects with some of the vibes and textures of Grime. Some rugged with the smooth. Here’s a podcast he did of all his own stuff, enjoy.

NASTY SPEAKS

by Matt Shadetek. September 3rd, 2009

Real talk from one of my favorite DJs in the UK Funky scene. In this interview by Blackdown Marcus Nasty speaks out in his traditional opinionated way about why he thinks the grime scene died and the way forward for UK Funky which he has become one of the leading DJs in. I enjoy Marcus sets because as a fellow post-grime person he is playing house but keeping it raw. I love the new UK funky sounds and have been playing a lot of it and find that it is even leading me into some of the smoother stuff but basically I still like raw, percussive, heavy tunes. Getting into a lot of what people think of as ‘normal house’ is just too far for me and a lot of the DJs coming from there into funky play too smooth for me. Marcus has (or has had, he’s sounding a little more mature now) a rep for being a big muscle-y dude who will beat you up and you can tell he’s pretty unconcerned about offending anyone which lends a certain truthiness to this interview.

Social Diver U So Trashy

by Taliesin. July 3rd, 2009

Good friend and fellow bass fiend The Crooked Clef has the best taste of any of the  bloggers writing over at Trash Menagerie. He also does serious damage behind his Traktor pulled decks. He has  been putting out a semi-regular series called Trash in the Bassment-  check last edition’s tropical deluge for confirmation of the mans skills and taste. His latest goes all  house-y in that way that I get embarrassed about loving. But believe- this is a HEAVY HEAVY mix that I can imagine going off at Night Slugs or any of the other gutter house/heavy bass parties that you can find out in the wide wide world. Below find Vol VI

TROPICAL FANTASY

by Matt Shadetek. June 29th, 2009

This is, how you say, my shit. Instinct, producer from De Tropix, made this mashup of Mavado’s hit So Blessed. Some people are saying ‘soca’ which seems to be everyone’s go to term for anything that is 4×4 with snares that aren’t straight on the upbeats. If you listen to soca you know that soca is FAST which this isn’t. Sounds kinda like Funky to me but with the sugary synths and Vado mashup I personally will be filing this under LDN Tropical. I like the graphic too but to really get there it needs more animals but that’s just me. Anyway, BAD.
