In a world of fast-paced information exchange and trending-topic fueled disposable culture, the Change The Mood series seeks to challenge club-going norms by explicitly connecting a hype party theme to its greater social context. This third edition of the Change The Mood event series takes its name from Dutty Artz co-founder Matt Shadetek’s new album, and will serve as the album release party for the project.

Matt Shadetek has always been at the forefront of blending cutting-edge electronic music technique with the aesthetics of the various urban-Black genres that shaped his experience growing up in New York City. Now that these types of fusions have become more visible in the mainstream, The Empire Never Ended has become Shadetek’s statement of underground permanence, carrying the stamp of Dutty Artz’ community-oriented approach, a sincere engagement with the local and global communities that inspire them artistically.

The spirit of the approach is carried throughout the history of Shadetek’s career. After years in Berlin, Shadetek returned to New York where the instrumental to his song “Brooklyn Anthem” with 77Klash and Jahdan had become a local hit in the dancehall scene. Having been re-titled the “Craziest Riddim” the tune spawned scores of YouTube dance clips. “It was crazy going to these teen reggae dances in Crown Heights and Flatbush and seeing the response. It made me want to make more music that could run in Brooklyn.” This is the essence of the Dutty Artz ground up aesthetic.
