An Open Letter to Venezuela

Translation below the original text.

Venezuela.

Venezuela . You big beautiful beast. I’ve heard the stories in your drums, your cumbias and the lament of your llanero music. I’ve laughed with your people, young decent folks and old timers with no teeth. Today, I offer you my support

What is happening inside of Venezuela is up to the people of Venezuela to fix. Help is not coming from outside and you don’t need it. You are the future. Whether with or against the Bolivarian government, choice is your human right, but there is an unseen third party in the country that is ruining your equilibrium  It’s a phantom party running the streets at night. That thuggishness that appears with such frequency that there isn’t one person among you that hasn’t told me the story of how someone kidnapped your friend, son, brother or father. How they robbed you a gunpoint or held a knife at your belly. How they raped your daughters, sisters, wives and grandmothers. These thugs and rage that fuels them reminds me of what New York suffered in the 80’s, when fear and insecurity reigned the streets. 30 years later, it is now coming to light that the criminal element in the 1980’s did not  manifest organically. It was a Frankenstein experiment the yankee government created to destroy the community and displace neighborhoods to open the doors for gentrification and racist hidden agendas.

Inflation of the Bolivar, or currency of any country, the entry of drugs and weapons do not occur without the knowledge and blessing of corrupt politicians. Every country has them and if you are SO convinced that your party is the best let me re-assure you that ALL politicians are full of shit and they do not have your best interest at heart. When milk or cotton supplies go missing in part of the country, it is the government’s fault . When a government controls all media and incoming and outgoing transmissions, they control the dialogue and human discourse in a way that makes it impossible to have frank conversation. They select the questions that get asked and who will sit in the make-up chair to represent the message. This tactic is used both here outside and inside your country but the difference is that the American government has lost control of its media. The media channels are completely under the control of corporate interests.

I’m not from Venezuela but I’d like to return one day to a less intense country. I count among you friends on both sides of the fence. What I want to tell you more than anything in this message is to please be very careful with how you speak to each other from here going forward. If words are the knife with which one cuts the daily bread, let us use that knife to divide that bread and to spread butter, honey and jam. I see you using words like daggers and insulting each other like blindfolded imbeciles. You’ve picked up the bad habit from Commander Chavez of talking to other Venezuelans as if they were your mortal enemies, when really you’re just neighbors and all of you ARE Venezuela. Historically that kind of disrespect has created oppressive situations like the conflict between Israel and Palestine which has lasted decades and I don’t want to see Venezuela get to that level of hatred within its borders. I beg you as a friend, with whom you’ve shared your bottles of rum and whiskey try not to be guided by anger about who loves or does not love their flag more, instead use that anger to investigate how all these guns are getting into your streets and why your police and court system is so inept as to let the violence against your citizens continue.
