Jah Mason – I Told You (Paul Alt Remix)

Belgium producer Paul Alt reheats a 77Klash riddim voiced by Jah Mason. I think it’s safe to say that riddims associated with 77Klash are immune to dying.  Klash City Records released The Swarm Riddim over two years ago, and refixes are still surfacing. Paul Alt whips up a sweet and heavy dance beat guaranteed to scorch dance floors, or just turn your holiday party a bit more nasty.  That artwork is very appropriate for the song’s lyrics. A man expresses an excessive desire for and to a girl he has been watching admiringly for a long time – Girlfriend, I told you,  you’re gonna be fine. Just give me your love & I’ll give you mine… After a few seconds, he tells her to keep it confidential.

The horns came from my days in Barcelona (Kurzweill K2000 in the house, I think), as did the vocal snippet – it was a group of French girls in front of the cathedral, singing, ambling. (I haven’t done any field recordings since my minidisc died.) This year Matt + I revisited those samples/sounds, built a new tune around it, and finished things off with a great live session over at DJ Kiva’s awesome studio setup out in Bburg – Kiva added guitar played through some wild filter, a bit of live percussion, the works.

This tune is on Solar Life Raft and Sara Taigher’s animation; here’s the unmixed original. Look for it on 12″ soon.

Geoff Manaugh, author of the BLDGBLOG book & blog,  will join DJ Rupture on Mudd Up! w/ DJ Rupture on WFMU tonight betweeen 7-8pm. Expect discussion to range from architectural acoustics & unexpected sample-discovery to a selection of Geoff’s favorite techno.

You already know the drill, tune in, throw in comments, questions, get involved, & heat up. Again, tonight @ 7PM.

URGENT CALL FOR SOUND COMPOSITIONS

On a topic even more urgent: Climate Chaos

Deadline: December 13, 2009

Public Performance: December 16, in the streets of Copenhagen during the Climate Summit, broadcast from the Sound Swarm, a of battery of bicycle-mounted megaphones within the Bike Bloc

Compensation: Air that you can breath & weather that doesn’t kill you

Curated by: Filastine

From the 7-18th of December the world’s leaders will be in Copenhagen to decide the conditions of this planet’s future. Given the suspects & their financial backing, it’s nearly impossible we’ll be presented with solutions, far more likely we’ll see further privatization, enclosure, and commodification of the our atmosphere under the alias of carbon trading.

This is your chance to put pressure, speak truth to power, or sonically disrupt, at HIGH VOLUME.

Anything on-topic is welcome: remix the speeches of corporate & government leaders, environmental soundscapes, the sounds of nature or it’s undoing, appropriate collages, home-cooked theme songs, subliminal mob-inflaming drones, advertising jingles of the apocalypse

Submission Details:

1. Composition can be of any duration, but there is no guarantee your composition will be broadcast.

2. The loudspeakers do not reproduce frequencies below 500hz. Use a highpass EQ filter. Also, megaphones respond better to longer sounds than short transients. Translation: no bass, no drums.

3. Please submit 5 dual-mono wave files with equal start times. Use the diagram below for conceptualizing space. If you are technically unable to compose and render for 5 channels, submit it anyhow, if it’s good I’ll make the effort to cut it into multi-channel.

4. Send files via an ftp, yousendit.com, sendthisfile.com, or a similar service to this email: filastine.soundswarm@gmail.com

5. Name the files like this:

African By The Bay
[Artwork/cover design by Lupo Avanti]

Dutty Artz is proud to present The African By The Bay EP, an exclusive collection of irresistible remixes from San Francisco/Bay Area producer Chief Boima. The EP is available for free download, and features a healthy dose of Afro dance remixes and instrumental reworkings of songs by Birdman (“Money To Blow” feat. Drake and Lil Wayne), Akon (“Right Now”), The Jacka (“Glamorous Lifestyle” feat. Andre Nickatina), Fabo & T-Pain (“Own Step”)

African By The Bay EP is a potent batch of new stateside rap tunes given the remix treatment by Boima, our favorite African-American (in the Obama sense) producer, whose trail-blazing approach weds percussive patterns from sounds like Ivorian Coupe Decale and Senegalese Mbalax. (Not to mention Angolan Kuduro, Nigerian Club, and South African Kwaito, and his Sierra Leonean Highlife and Palm-Wine refix of Cold Flamez “Miss Me, Kiss Me”.)

African By The Bay (62 megabyte ZIP file), feel free to to download and re-post on your site.

telepathe1

Telepathe‘s Dance Mother album has been one of the year’s standouts for me; the instant I heard it I knew I wanted to incorporate some of the material in our Solar Life Raft‘s emergency toolkit. (Never face the end of the world without nice synths – solar-powered when possible – and singing).

Matt Shadetek and I did two totally different remixes of “In Your Line”. This version, where we excavated a drafty house with bass foundations and disappeared the original guitars & drums, won out.

XLR8R has it on exclusive. Duppy artz!

Jay Electronica – Swagger Jackson’s Revenge

Regardless who you vote for
If the mind don’t grow, and the poverty lines don’t go
But the dope keep coming, and the TV keeps flashing images of a sports car
Then you’re bound for a coke war
The meek get clowned by the coke law
The sheep get drown in the folklore
Then lured to sleep by Tom Brokaw
What a pity?
The hope on the politician’s tongue never ever trickles down to the city.

This track is from a compilation/mixtape floating around titled ElectroChemicals, containing exclusive songs and rare materials previously available only as radio-rips or web/myspace-rips from Jay Electronica – a brilliant voice in hip hop (in music and poetry in general) who is going to set drop an album in 2010. This cut has a great Michael Jackson speech in the intro— from an interview in which The King sounded defiant, and saying there’s a conspiracy in the US; it is suspicious that his album is number one all around the world, except in America where he is facing all kinds of legal and financial woes.
