Zomby – Digital Fauna

Just when you thought you’re safe and updated in the Zomby department because you’ve been listening to One Foot Ahead Of The Other for a few days and realizing the simplicity and inventiveness that is in “Expert Tuition,” out comes Digital Flora –more freshness from out of nowhere, shout out to Mike for the heads up. “Ditital Fauna” is extremely warm, romantic, and intoxicating, and I’m only thinking about its surface groove –the “playful” beat and melodic structure. Is Zomby the most interesting dubstep producer/making the most exciting dubstep in the world right now? Is Boomkat comparing him to that other technoid auteur?

Pill speaks about coming up in West ATL’s Pink City, the hard, un-glossed reality he deliberately portrayed in his video for “Trap Goin’ Ham” -which ruffled a few feathers, trapping and rapping, other generalities like blunt communication/honest expression thru rap.

The compilations are released on Soundway Records.  I am especially looking forward to the talk and the music Beto is going to play for us. I have been fascinated with the music of Panama ever since our visit from Wayne Marshall and Raquel Z Revera. Back in 2003 I wrote an essay for The Wire’s ‘Epiphanies’ section. The piece detailed my high-school encounter with a bootleg cassette compilation of Japanese noise stitched together by RRRecords. It was published in their April issue (coverboys: Autechre). Here’s an except:

The RRR cassette was polarising, but it was also personal and fragile; and I had the sense that if I didn’t listen closely, it might pass unnoticed. I knew nothing about these groups, but it was obvious that an individual with photocopier access and a dual cassette deck could make a substantial difference in their world. This scene had a tangible scale. It stood within grasp, which suggested that I could actively participate in music – any music, especially the weird stuff – rather than remain a well-informed consumer.

For the last few months, Jahdan has been constantly, sonically bombing the internet with quality heat.  If you think the tracks on Bazooka Shot were crazy, just wait until you hear the album. Better yet, head over to iTunes, where you can preview and buy the first single from the album Buzzrock Warrior.  The single is called “She Said”and it features 77klash.  Jahdan’s voice is beautiful and pure on this one, but the beat and the bass are shifty, and Klash spits some cryptic, classic lines on this.  The album comes out September 15th (9/14 for those in the UK!), which is just around the corner. Get hustlin, get ready!

Schlachthofbronx are preparing to release their debut. Gnonnas Pedro & His Dadjes Band – La Musica en Verité

This is from Analog Africa’s latest compilation of incredible/obscure/forgotten 1970s West African dancefloor masterpieces Legends of Benin. We play sweet, deep throwbacks like this one every Monday 7PM to 8PM Mudd Up radio with DJ Rupture on WFMU 91.1 fm (listen from the archives)– stream, or get podcast. “La Musica en Verité” is the amazing closing track on Legends of Benin. It’s an inviting and inspiring jam, calling you, telling you to get on the floor and shake your bones a little before the party ends, but I’ll manage to squeeze it in among all the fresh, happening raps early @ NYT9 this Friday!
